In this tutorial Liveschool trainer Thomas McAlister demonstrates a quick sound design tip to Ableton Live’s Simple Delay audio effect behave more like an analog style delay (or tape echo) by utilising the somewhat hidden repitch mode, in combination with automation and the Max For Live LFO.

This tip can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from subtle LFO modulation or automation of the delay speed of Live’s Simple Delay (in repitch mode) which will emulate the slight pitch drift inherent in the echos of most classic tape delays, to more rapid movements of the delay speed which results in wilder pitch variations and sound effects characteristic of an analog style delay.
