The Co-Producer Sprint Chronicles

One of our very favourite things to do is to match students and graduates with guest artists to all make music together in our facilities. We call this the “Co-Producer Sprint” and anyone signed up to this event knows what they’re in for – one full day in our studios, together, to make one track per person.

Time limits and working with artists you haven’t met might be a bit of a scary thought, but we’ve been running this event for over 7 years with many students returning time and time again. Reason being, the day is actually more about collaboration and feeling the pressure as a team. Turns out putting a bit of time pressure on a group of creatives kills off any writer’s block or lack of inspiration.

This year’s Co-Producer Sprint featured special guests Sakura Tsuruta & George Nicholas.

We were fortunate enough to have Sakura join us from Tokyo where she is based at the Ableton Asia Pacific Headquarters, working with artists across the region. As an avid sound designer and composer for film, dance and interactive installations, Sukara injected  a wealth of creativity and inspiration on the day as a mentor and fellow producer.

Everyone also got to enjoy the company and mentorship of George Nicholas who is a producer (Seekae / Cliques), mix engineer (Cosmo’s Midnight / Winston Surfshirt), Ableton Certified Trainer and a longtime member of the Liveschool training team.

And just to recap the crew collectively started off by making a custom set of monster sounds and loops using all our hardware, instruments and gear. They then put all these sounds and loops together in Ableton, during a high energy afternoon collab session.

We ended the day by listening to all 12 tracks that were made, as always – lots of surprises, a stack of wacky sounds, a couple of bangers and most importantly smiles galore.

You’ll see all this magic and more in our gallery. Expect to hear the finished versions via our blog soon!
