Ableton Live 12.2 Beta: Taking Sound Design and Workflow to New Heights

Ableton has been delivering excellent point-updates in recent years, and 12.2 continues this trend. These point-updates (like 12.2) are free for existing Live 12 owners and provide compelling reasons for users of earlier versions to upgrade.

From a completely redesigned Auto Filter to the powerful new Bounce In Place features and other workflow enhancements, this update delivers meaningful improvements that both beginners and seasoned producers will appreciate.

Auto Filter 2: Reimagined From The Ground Up

The star of the show in Live 12.2 is undoubtedly the completely redesigned Auto Filter. This isn’t just a visual refresh – it’s a comprehensive overhaul that brings new creative possibilities to your productions.

Vowel formants: can I get an “Ooh yay”?

The new device layout emphasises key parameters with improved visualisations, including separate displays for left and right channel filter frequency modulation and real-time signal spectrum for the output.

New Filter Types
  • DJ Filter – Controls both low-pass and high-pass filters with a single parameter, similar to DJ mixers
  • Comb Filter – Perfect for creating flanging effects, especially when modulated
  • Vowel Filter – Shapes sound to resemble human voice by emphasising formants
  • Morph Filter – Now features four different slopes and can morph between low-pass and high-pass filtering
  • Resampling Filter and Notch + LP Filter complete the new additions
Updated Filter Circuits
  • SVF – Functions as a linear/clean filter that can introduce distortion with Drive
  • DFM – A new filter circuit with internal distortion feedback for tones ranging from subtle filter sweeps to warm drive
  • MS2 – Uses a Sallen-Key design modeled on filters from a famous Japanese monosynth
  • PRD – Uses a ladder design modeled on filters from a legacy US monosynth

Bounce Tracks to Audio: Streamlined Workflow

Two powerful new commands for bouncing tracks have been added to Live 12.2, representing a significant workflow enhancement:

Liveschool Produce Music 2022 Applications Open
  • Bounce Track in Place – Render entire tracks as new audio tracks
  • Bounce to New Track – Render time selections into new audio clips on separate tracks

Bouncing is performed pre-mixer and post-FX, meaning your source track’s effects processing is included in the rendered audio. This feature streamlines your production workflow and opens up new creative possibilities.

Resonators device is now scale-aware

Something we’ve been hoping for ever since Live 12 introduce the scale awareness feature that makes it easy to work on harmonies and keep everything in tune.

This video compares:
No effect > How it used to work > How it works now in 12.2

Spectral Resonator is also now scale-aware

Great for adding a metallic twang to drums and percussion, you can now automatically tune that twang to your song with scale-aware button. A tip for this is you must first switch the switch the frequency control mode from Hz to Note.

Browser Improvements: Better Organisation

The browser experience has been completely redesigned to better accommodate filtering and tagging features:

  • Redesigned Filter View with a cleaner interface
  • Customisable content columns that can be reordered by dragging
  • New Quick Tags panel for viewing, adding, or removing tags
  • Custom icons for labels in Library and user folders in Places

These improvements make organising and finding your sounds faster and more intuitive than ever before.

Device Improvements: Expanded Sound Design Options

Roar Updates

Roar receives some exciting new features in this update:

  • New Delay routing mode for creating single distorted repetitions or slapbacks
  • Dispersion filter type that distorts signal phase for metallic, spring-like artifacts
  • External sidechain for the envelope follower modulation source
  • MIDI sidechain to control feedback pitch in Note modeDispersion on Dispersion on Dispersion on…
Meld, Resonators and Spectral Resonator
  • Meld adds a new Chord oscillator type with four sawtooth oscillators for varied chords
  • Resonators and Spectral Resonator now support scale awareness with the Use Current Scale toggle
  • Both devices now support tuning systems for expanded creative options

New “Expressive Chords” device

Allows you to assign whole chords to single MIDI controller keys or Push pads. This brings the ability to play or perform complex chord progressions easily:

Automation and Modulation Keyboard Workflow

The new keyboard workflow for automation offers precision and accessibility:

  • Add, edit, and delete automation breakpoints using keyboard shortcuts
  • Navigate along the grid with arrow keys
  • Precise editing of breakpoint values
  • Screen reader support for enhanced accessibility
