After emerging from the pop star boom of the early 2000s, The Veronicas have gone on the become one of Australia’s most iconic acts. With their early hits breaking through and dominating the pre-streaming world, it’s interesting to see how an act with almost 20 years of history keeps things fresh for today’s music market.
For the Veronicas, the way to keep pushing forward is to enlist a little bit of help from some of the most in demand songwriters and producers. Such as three Liveschool alumni on the latest album.
Most apparent on the new album is Lies featuring graduate Muki and trainer Sam Sakr. Muki is a name bubbling up everywhere, and with a left-field hyperpop sound she is fast becoming one of the most exciting names in Australian music. Her contribution leads Lies into darker territory than we might have expected from The Veronicas, thanks in part to trainer Sam Sakr on production duties. Bringing his signature brooding synths and penchant for massive hooks, Sam and Muki deliver the one-two punch that has Lies sounding like the most intense track the Veronicas have ever released.
In addition to Sam and Muki we have graduate Isabella Kearney-Nurse appearing all over the record with five writing credits to her name, including the hit Think Of Me which is racking up millions of streams across digital platforms. Big collabs are nothing new to Isabella, coming off the back of success with writing for Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian, we look forward to seeing what she has in store for the future of pop music.
And finally circling back around to our man Sam Sakr, with two credits on the record, including the dynamic piano led number LA. Sam throws down one of the hardest hitting snares on a pop record recently which lends LA a massive sense of space. He steps up to deliver one of the best chorus moments on a record packed with big moves. Its all over in 2:50, and as they say – less is more!
