Support your dealer! As part of our new Local Wax series, we’ll be hitting up our neighbourhood record shops and local selectors on the regular, asking for their top picks of recently released Australian vinyl.
This time around, we took a stroll up the hill to visit Stephan Gyroy at The Record Store to ask what’s been getting some solid plays on the shop system. Steph picked out a fine little soundtrack of laid back electronica, heavy dancefloor cuts, and new wave obscurities. Check it out below.
Tornado Wallace – Lonely Planet
Top track: Trance Encounters
Label: Running Back
We’re diggin’ how this is completely current but also harks back to 80’s Aussie Wave and Rock. It’s like Ice House and Duran Duran made love on acid.
Midnite Spares
Compiled by András and Instant Peterson
Top track: Poets of the Machine – Arabs
Label: Efficient Space
Andras and Instant Peterson have collected a bunch of wonderfully random Aussie business. Our fave is Arabs: a track by Perth duo Poets of the Machine. It just oozes with personality and has a snappy little hook.
Sleep D – BSR 10.5
Top track: Space Pillow
Label: Butter Sessions
A rolling, acid-tinged psychedelic stormer with a grinding deep house bassline. Masterful production – listen LOUD.
M5K – Absolutely Real
Top track: Can’t Never Get Enuff
Label: Hobo Camp
The Miami Vice ethic of the cover is not just skin deep, it permeates this funked-out street-style release. Makes us want to have cocktails by the pool in pink leisure suits.
VA – Ken Oath Records 002
Top track: Caravan – Banksia
Label: Ken Oath Records
6 track EP of dreamy, post wave, nu-nu-wave electronica (yes, we did). Laid-back, quirky tracks for the lounge room or the dance floor. Snappy old school drums.
