It’s been a hot minute since Flume released his sophomore album ‘Skin’ and with great delight, the Grammy Award-winner and former Liveschool trainer has surprised us all quite suddenly with a smashingly exciting and experimental mixtape dubbed, ‘Hi This Is Flume’.

Stylistically, this brings to the fore the darker heavier flavours that were hinted at in ‘Skin’ and elaborated on in the two ‘Skin Companion EP’s’. These future-leaning and boundary-pushing missives are where Flume gets to flex without the constraint of pop-accessibility, while also developing the sound designs that give his more radio-friendly releases their undeniable edge.

With ‘Hi This Is Flume’, he also dropped an accompanying  “Mixtape Visualiser” video on release day which has since climbed to over 1 million views. Created by collaborator and friend Jonathan Zawada the audio and visual experience takes you on a 40+ minute journey across a myriad of saturated cinematic ideas to match each songs mood in the mixtape.

Flume also spoilt us with a bonus selection of tracks on titled – “Hi This Is Flume – Essentials Playlist” . The playlist featuring fellow Liveschool course contributor Kučka along with the likes of Diplo, Ross from Friends, Sampa the Great, Ta-ku (we were low key pretty pleased that Dolly Parton’s Joelene made the cut). Have a scroll through it on Spotify. It will take you through many different waves and textures, a good one for ideas fellow music producers!

If, like most of us, Flume’s mixtape has inspired you to get back in the studio or give music production a go, check out “A Beginner’s Guide to Music Production with Flume & Liveschool”. The course is  free and was developed in collaboration with Flume and label Future Classic to celebrate the Deluxe Edition release.
